In 1880 France, after a bank robbery and the murder of employee Michelle, wealthy Chevalier Lucio del Gardo offers to save the Brisson Bank in exchange for marrying M. de Brisson's daughter, Cecile, who loves clerk Lucien. Chavalier frames Lucien to eliminate him.
